BIG DAY OUT
Considered one of the biggest music festivals, Big Day Out is an nationwide festival (plus New Zealand) that pumps out some of the coolest names from the likes of indie, metal, punk and rock. Playing in Sydney, Gold Coast, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne, and Auckland- it starts off with Auckland in late January each year.
This year’s line up included; Rammstein (a pyrotechnic-sporting techno-rock German band), M.I.A, Bloody Beetroots, Birds of Tokyo, Bliss n Eso, Angus and Julia Stone, Little Red and Washington.

Catch it next year- lookout for http://www.bigdayout.com/ .
Amazing bands+ live music + care for the planet= an environmentally guilt free day of awesomeness!!!!
Prior to the 2007 show, Big Day Out ran two energy audits that measured how much greenhouse gas emissions were caused by their energy usage. To reduce their carbon emissions- the folks at BDO committed to ‘Carbon Offset’ the shows, so in 2007, 6,735 Eucalyptus trees were planted on 4.5 hectares of land at Narromine in central NSW.
After the second energy audit in 2008, 9,248 Eucalypt trees were planted just outside Fifield in central west NSW. At the 2009 show, 5% of the carbon output was saved just by proper waste management at the shows. By doing all of this- it has helped balance the carbon output released due to Big Day Out shows.
A ‘Carbon Free Big Day Out’ Green Ticket has been released, which, for an extra $1.34 a day, you can offset your share of the energy output, as it contributes to planting more trees. Saving the planet for just over a dollar? Brilliant Idea :)
SOUNDWAVE
Possibly the best (pirate themed) metal festival you will ever attend, Soundwave is not for the faint of heart. Playing nationwide at Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane, it starts in late Feb at Brisbane, and finishes early March in Perth.

This year’s line up includes; Bullet for my Valentine, Slayer (who ended-up ditching their act with seconds to go as a band member was taken off to hospital for an ear infection....so much for being angry, hard metal rockers!), 30 seconds to Mars, Avenged Sevenfold, Mayday Parade, We the Kings, Saxon and metal legends such as Slash and Rob Zombie. And Never Shout Never- a guy playing the ukulele singing songs about love next to hardcore metal bands. Love it :) On their website, they have a section called ‘Walk the Plank’, where fans can chat to their favourite bands live. It’s like having an msn-sesh with a metal band! GOOD VIBRATIONS
With a mix of indie/mainstream and techno/pop- this festival is sure to get you dancing. Stating at Sydney in the middle of Febuary, it then goes to Melbourne, gold coast, and finishes at Perth. Pheonix, The Ting Tings, Ludacris, Mike Posner, Yolanda Be Cool, Sindney Samson, and many more will be rocking out at good vibrations. So if you want to see if you are cooler than Mike Posner, or telling the Ting Tings what your name is head down to Good Vibrations. Read more at: http://www.goodvibrationsfestival.com.au
