American Airlines
American Airlines is one of the biggest in the world, flying to 260 destinations in 40 countries, but it started in a small way. Way back, on the 15th of April, 1926, Charles A. Lindbergh stowed a bag of mail in his little biplane and took off from Chicago for St. Louis. Later that day, he and two other pilots flew three plane loads of mail from St. Louis to Chicago. ![]() Around the 1930's. that airline was just one of the many, many small operators which were consolidated under the banner of American Airways which eventually became the international flight company ‘American Airlines’. Since then it's had a pretty interesting history, even turning over half its fleet of planes to the US Airforce during WWII. Click here to read about the history of American Airlines. Headquartered in Texas, American Airlines is a member of the One World alliance (in fact it was the first!). Members of the alliance work in conjunction with other airlines so that their flight paths practically cover the entire globe. This means that wherever you are, you can always count on them to get you from A to B, at a high level of comfort and safety...and keep earning your frequent flyer points. American Airlines was also the first major airline to recruit a female pilot- Bonnie Tiburzi, in 1973....well done AA! We travelled with them on several flights around America, and they were so hospitable to our every request! The flight attendants were efficient..we had our favourite of course who was just THE most wonderful flight attendant we've ever encountered. Even on the plane, when we were slightly nervous (ok- freaking out) about the take off, the flight attendants came over, had a little d & m with us and gave us magazines to flick through! Which brings me to the in-flight magazine they have on board. Normally on other airlines, you can buy something from the duty free shop on board such as a necklace, or an expensive perfume. This magazine offered the finest range of marshmallow guns to life-sized tiki heads from Easter Island! Best flight attendant in the Universe!!! We were lucky enough to get an interview with one of their charming pilots, who was not only a wonderful character, but had an answer for just about every tricky question we threw at him. (Video of interview coming soon). ![]() ![]() The truly fabulous Captain Taylor Us at the controls...ha ha - scared???? (actually on the ground terrified just in case we touch anything!) Note: cockpits are NOT comfy or spacious!) Thanks to everyone at American Airlines who were so unbelievably helpful, courteous and accommodating. You turned a simple flight into a real experience! And this will be a Link to ‘How does an aeroplane work’ once we've written it! |
