New Wave Energy Converter in Scotland A new Wave Energy Converter (WEC)has been switched on at the Wavegen Islay site at Portnahaven, Scotland. Jim Mather and Matthew Seed officially switch on the new turbine (right) The 100kW turbine was developed with support from the Scottish Government’s WATES (Wave and Tidal Energy Support) scheme. It's a very exciting move as it means the Siadar Wave Energy Project (SWEP), which is under development by npower renewables on the Isle of Lewis, is that step closer. The new turbine; smaller but more powerful: SWEP will harness the massive waves of the Atlantic and generate up to 4 megawatts of electricity, through the use of 40 Wavegen 100kW turbines. This amount of energy could supply the electricity for 1500 homes on Lewis and Harris.
